Rave:Turnaround

Mandy Unger

In the dance solo RAVE:TURNAROUND, choreographer and dancer Mandy Unger, also known as M.over, dedicates her work to the East German transformation process of the 1990s.
Shaped by the overlap of new beginnings and collapse, of loss and opportunity, people in the time of reunification faced extraordinary challenges.
In East Germany, raves and techno became a collective space for coping — drawing many into abandoned factory halls where, not long before, work had followed a rigid rhythm.

In this solo, she contrasts the ambivalent mood of that era — between ecstatic euphoria and latent fear.
The piece traces the experiences of the 1990s, exploring interactive moments with the audience as well as the purely physical experience of a rave — the frenzy, the dancing, the noise, the bouncing, the letting go.
The phenomenon of “Wende” (the political and social “turning point”) is not only viewed historically here, but also taken quite literally — and examined physically.
