Alte Not
East Germany in the 1990s
For an intergenerational theatre project, we are looking for people from Jena and the surrounding area who experienced the 1990s in East Germany as children, teenagers or adults.
No previous theatre experience is required – we welcome everyone who would like to contribute their memories, personal stories and perspectives on this period and perform on stage themselves.
What is it about?
The 1990s in East Germany: a time of upheaval, painful changes and a sense of new beginnings. How did people experience this period? What connects different generations – and where do their perspectives differ when looking back? What aspects of this time have already been widely talked about – and what has received less attention?
We want to collect personal memories and experiences from people of different generations. Together with all participants, we will create a theatre production that will be presented on the stage of Theaterhaus Jena from 5 May 2027.
Who can take part?
We are looking for people in Jena and the surrounding area who:
- experienced the 1990s and early 2000s in East Germany – whether as adults, teenagers or children
- would like to act in a theatre production and perform on stage. No previous experience is required – beginners are explicitly welcome!
- are interested in exploring the 1990s and sharing their personal experiences.
We explicitly invite people who have experienced racism and/or hostility towards queer people to be part of the project.
Schedule
Starting in November 2026, we will rehearse approximately once a month in blocks: Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday during the day. The premiere and performances will begin on 5 May 2027. The exact rehearsal dates will be announced during the introductory workshops.
Introductory Workshops
Would you be interested in taking part in the project, but would like to find out more first? Not sure whether theatre is your thing, but interested in the topic? We warmly invite you to one of our introductory workshops. You will get to know the team, get an impression of the project's working methods and, of course, have the opportunity to ask questions.
Registration for the Workshop
If you need any support or have questions, please feel free to get in touch.
Interested, but unable to attend an introductory workshop? Just send us an email.
