Oft sterben wir nicht (SOKSZOR NEM HALUNK MEG)

»Often we don't die«

Andrea Tompa’s novel SOKSZOR NEM HALUNK MEG (German: OFT STERBEN WIR NICHT, English: OFTEN WE DON'T DIE) begins in 1944 in Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca, Romania) during the time of ghettoization and ends in the early 1990s in Transylvania after the fall of the dictatorship.

At its center is a woman who, as a child, is entrusted by her Jewish mother to a Hungarian couple in order to be saved from deportation. She grows up under a new name and becomes an actress. Only through her work in the theater does she find access to her true identity. The search for herself—both on stage and in everyday life—accompanies her throughout her life.

With her production, Ildikó Gáspár seeks to break the silence and repression of history in a linguistically and identity-wise complex sphere by confronting the past.
