Equipment assistant position starting in the 2026/27 season
Theaterhaus Jena has been an established part of the German theatre landscape since 1991, serving as an aesthetic laboratory and a springboard for emerging stage artists. It is considered a pioneering theatre model positioned between the independent scene and municipal theatre. The repertoire includes world premieres as well as reinterpretations of modern classics and devised productions. Theaterhaus operates as a non-profit limited liability company under private sponsorship and receives institutional funding from the City of Jena and the Free State of Thuringia.
For the upcoming season (2026/27), we are looking for a dedicated Assistant for Set and Costume Design (full-time) for our productions.
Compensation is based on the internal salary structure of Theaterhaus and standard industry rates.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and supporting productions in coordination with set and costume designers
- Participating in construction rehearsals, model presentations, concept submissions, fittings, and technical rehearsals, including documentation and minute-taking
- Setting up and supervising rehearsals until handover to the respective departments
- Acting as a key liaison between designers and technical departments, including the joint creation of schedules
- Creating and updating costume, props, and production lists as well as сценarios
- Assisting in material selection, product research, and procurement
- Supporting work in costume, makeup, props, and stage construction departments
- Maintaining and organizing the design department workspace and equipment, as well as independently accounting for materials
- Close collaboration with the assistant director on prompt book management and scheduling
- Close collaboration with production management regarding budgeting and space planning
- Supervising and selecting participants in the Federal Volunteer Service (BFD) / FSJ Culture, as well as mentoring interns in the design department
- Supporting performances as needed
What we are looking for:
- Ideally, practical experience in theatre within the design/set/costume field
- Creativity and resourcefulness in realizing artistic concepts
- Artistic sensitivity and a high degree of flexibility
- Strong communication skills and organizational talent
- Independent yet team-oriented working style, with reliability and attention to detail
- Knowledge of Office and CAD applications, as well as experience in building stage models
- Willingness to work theatre-typical hours
- A Class B driver’s license is an advantage
