Since 1991, Theaterhaus Jena has been an established part of the German theatre landscape, serving as an artistic laboratory and launching pad for emerging performing artists. It is regarded as a pioneering theatre model that bridges the independent performing arts scene and the municipal theatre system. Its programme includes world premieres, contemporary adaptations of classic works, and collaboratively developed productions.
Theaterhaus Jena is a non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH) under private management and receives institutional funding from the City of Jena and the Free State of Thuringia.
We are looking to appoint, at the earliest possible date and no later than 1 October 2026, a
Head of Audio/Video and IT Administration (m/f/d)
Full-time (100%) – 40 hours per week
This position combines responsibility for leading the Audio/Video Department with the administration of the theatre's internal IT and network infrastructure.
The role is designed as an approximately 50/50 combination of both areas of responsibility. While the position is primarily intended as a single full-time role, it may be divided into two part-time positions (approximately 50% each) should suitable candidates be available.
Your responsibilities
Head of Audio/Video
- Lead the Audio/Video Department both professionally and organizationally.
- Plan, set up, operate, and document audio, video, and media technology for rehearsals, performances, guest productions, and special events.
- Maintain, supervise, and further develop the theatre's existing audio, video, and media systems.
- Collaborate closely with directors, designers, the Technical Director, and Production Management in the technical planning of productions.
- Support guest artists and external production teams in all audio/video-related matters.
- Maintain, service, and manage technical equipment.
- Contribute to procurement processes, technical standards, and the ongoing development of the department.
Internal IT and Network Administration
- Maintain and further develop the theatre's internal IT and network infrastructure.
- Administer a heterogeneous network environment consisting of Linux, Windows, and Apple systems.
- Focus primarily on Linux system administration.
- Administer the theatre's software environment, particularly Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Nextcloud, and email services.
- Manage user accounts, permissions, and workstations.
- Administer and maintain backup systems, NAS storage, and servers.
- Ensure reliable, well-documented, and secure IT operations.
- Provide day-to-day IT support for colleagues throughout the organisation.
Your profile
You should have:
- completed vocational training or a university degree in event technology, media technology, audio engineering, IT systems administration, computer science, or a comparable qualification, or equivalent professional experience;
- solid expertise in audio, video, and media technology, ideally within a theatre or live events environment;
- sound knowledge of Linux system administration, along with basic experience working in Windows and Apple environments;
- experience with networks, servers, backup systems, and user management;
- leadership experience or the willingness to take responsibility for a small team or specialist department;
- a strong interest in collaborative work and artistic production processes;
- flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required;
- an independent, structured, and responsible working style;
- excellent communication and organisational skills, initiative, and a solution-oriented mindset.
